Local web app connects the college search to social media
Brian Summerhill chose to launch his business idea through Start Co. before he was accepted into the accelerator program. His idea was based on the realization that school guidance counselors, with an average caseload of 500 students, are struggling to help their students find the right college fit. He developed MyCollegeSTREAM as a web application that helps guidance counselors get students engaged in the college search process by using college social media. “Seventy-five percent of high school students research college on social media, and there are plenty of accounts floating around across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. MyCollegeSTREAM has found a way to harness these accounts onto one platform, making them easily accessible to students so that when they visit their guidance counselor, they will have a better idea of the college they are considering, as well as potential majors and future careers,” explained Summerhill. City of Memphis, EPIcenter Get $50,000 for Startup Efforts
When Walter Perry, director of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Tennessee district office, joins other SBA staff in presenting Memphis officials Wednesday, Sept. 2, with a $50,000 Start Small Model prize, the ceremony will be more than a perfunctory civic affair. That’s because the event, happening at 12:30 p.m. at Rec Room, 3000 Broad Ave., is another in a string of recent indications that Memphis’ startup community is in the midst of a bumper crop of good news. Examples of its momentum include the city welcoming entrepreneurs to a newly created startup accelerator and the existence of fresh startup-focused leaders like Leslie Smith, the new president of EPIcenter, who was tapped for the job earlier this year. Unlike their previous year’s schedule of four sessions in a span of a week, this schedule should accommodate any startup or startup-support organization that’s seeking to be part of the Delta Entrepreneurship Network (DEN) Fellowship program.
