Reppin’ the 901 in Silicon Valley

As many of you know, this spring I left Start Co. to join a startup. What can I say? After surrounding myself with the grit ‘n grind of ambitious founders I caught the entrepreneurial bug myself. The company I’ve joined is called SynapsePay – a Memphis-born startup that processes bank payments (in tech-speak, we’ve built a white-labeled API for ACH payments). We have a great team that I’ve watched from the very start, so needless to say it was an honor to join and an awesome opportunity for me professionally. Since transitioning into my new role with SynapsePay, our team has relocated to San Francisco to be closer to our customers. Although the decision to move was the right one for our team, we wouldn’t be where we were today without the amazing support we found in Memphis, including our investors and advisors, our banking partners, our early adopters, and the startup ecosystem (shout out to the Crews Center and Start Co.). As for me personally, I want you all to know that I am still as in love with Memphis as I ever was. It has had such a huge impact on my life, and I am incredibly grateful to the city and the people who poured so much into me.  When you love Memphis, it loves you back, and that has certainly been the case for me tenfold. I am now one month into my life in San Francisco, but my eyes will be on Memphis in the

Start Co. helps organizations apply entrepreneurial principles to advance business models

Principles in creative problem-solving lead public and private groups to improve efficiencies, outputs and impacts Memphis, Tenn. (March 24, 2015) – Start Co. today announced the formalization of an offering that leverages learnings from the startup accelerator process to help non-startup groups in the public and private sectors, including nonprofits, government entities and civic organizations, utilize entrepreneurial principles and creative problem solving to fine tune their business models, as well as launch new products or efforts and accelerate talent. Over the last four years, Start Co. has run pilot programs that tested out the process with several Memphis organizations, including the Memphis Public Library, the Department of Journalism at the University of Memphis, the Shelby County Public Defender’s Office, Rhodes College, among others. Start Co. has worked with these organizations to improve the efficiency of their processes, specifically by leading projects that explore customer discovery and running “experiments” to confirm success and make adjustments if one approach is not yielding the desired results. Start Co. has helped conduct business modeling efforts with these organizations to ensure proposed efforts align with organizational goals. “Start Co. has inspired us to raise the bar on the kinds of services we can provide,” said Diane Jalfon, executive director of the Memphis Library Foundation. “Their methodology helped us examine our patrons’ needs to develop programming and resources for our Small Business Center and provide technical programming for our newly developed Cloud901 teen learning lab.” Upcoming this year, Start Co. will be working with the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable

I need a developer. Can you introduce me?

Many people walk in our doors with ideas they believe will change the world and make them rich. The problem they invariably have is that they can’t build it. 95% of these potential founders have an idea for an mobile app or web app and they want the Start Co. team to play matchmaker to a developer. These potential founders don’t realize that the developer probably has his own awesome ideas. Why would he switch from developing his ideas to developing yours? These potential founders will get nowhere with developers because they have ignored the obvious: a developer is your first investor. Like all investments you need to earn the right to ask! Here is the typical scenario. A non-technical founder approaches a potential technical co-founder with just an idea. These potential founders usually have very little skin in the game. They haven’t invested a ton of their own time, but expect a developer to contribute 100s of hours. They haven’t even dipped into their own funds to get something mocked up or designed. These potential founders have not invested energy into determining who the customer is, understanding their buying behaviors, or even determined if they would want the app and pay for it. The outcome is always the same. The developer says no, gets annoyed with wannabe entrepreneurs and gets turned off to the startup world. This is a very bad outcome for our entire community and could all be avoided. Imagine going to a technical co-founder and saying the following:

Start Co. Expands Its Downtown Space

(Memphis Daily) The organization helping startup founders launch new ventures in Memphis will soon have more elbow room for the space where it holds events, teaches and provides a co-working environment for startup teams. The Start Co. crew has signed a lease for extra space for its Downtown “Start Lab” at 88 Union Ave., increasing the current footprint to 7,600 square feet – 80 percent more space that includes expanded amenities for entrepreneurs like an outdoor patio for events and networking opportunities. The lease was signed earlier this month, and construction is expected to be finished by April. Once that’s done, the new space will provide a home in which startup teams participating in Start Co.’s summer accelerator programming can co-work as they get busy building their respective ventures. More than that, though, the “Start Lab” will also be transformed into an event space for the varied entrepreneurial and technology communities that exist in the city. Memberships will be offered to the community area of the Start Lab, for example, and will allow members continuous access to the space. Office hours, business development and investment strategy workshops also will be held in the community event and training space, and requests can be made for use of the space for meetings and events by accelerator alumni, technology user groups and other organizations.
