Fifteen years ago, Start Co. embarked on a mission to catalyze economic transformation through innovation. Our journey has been one of continuous evolution, adapting to the dynamic needs of the communities we serve. Today, we stand as a testament to the power of innovation-driven development, with a rich history of projects and research that have shaped our path.
Pioneering Projects: Driving Equity and Mobility
Our commitment to fostering equitable growth and sustainable mobility has led to impactful collaborations:
Equity Initiatives
National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) Partnership: As the innovation partner for NBMBAA, we have developed programs, systems, and a venture network to support initiatives such as national pitch competitions and accelerator programs. This collaboration aims to empower Black professionals and entrepreneurs, providing them with the resources and networks necessary for success.
State of Black Business Analysis: In collaboration with Heartland Forward and local Memphis partners, we conducted a comprehensive data analysis of Black-owned businesses in the Memphis region. This research informs policy, funding, and service delivery, addressing disparities and promoting inclusive economic growth.
The Social Envelope: Partnering with Amazon and Memphis stakeholders, we prototyped software that maps an entrepreneur’s journey, aligning them with the appropriate resources, skills, and environments essential for success. This initiative enhances support systems for entrepreneurs, particularly those from underserved communities.
South City Digital Inclusion Initiative: Collaborating with The Women’s Foundation and various digital inclusion partners, we brought infrastructure, digital literacy, and education to 1,000 households in one of Memphis's most distressed zip codes. This project addresses the digital divide, ensuring that all community members have access to the tools necessary for participation in the modern economy.
Sustainable Mobility Projects
City:One Challenge: In partnership with Ford Motor Company and various mobility partners, we engaged the community to pilot solutions addressing urban mobility challenges. This initiative fosters community-driven innovation to improve transportation systems.
Mobility & Electrification Alliance: Collaborating with LG and a network of startups, academics, and mobility partners, we accelerated new solutions, shared best practices, and developed business opportunities among alliance members, promoting sustainable transportation technologies.
Integrated E-Mobility Network: Working with GALP Energy and DaLoop, we established a comprehensive charging network to enhance electric mobility management in the region, supporting the transition to cleaner transportation options.
Urban & Regional Mobility: In collaboration with the Memphis Area Transit Authority and the University of Memphis, we explored, developed, and implemented solutions for the efficient movement of people, goods, and services in both urban and rural settings, improving connectivity and economic activity.
Groundbreaking Research: Informing Strategy and Policy
Our research endeavors have been pivotal in shaping strategies and informing policy:
Black Business Opportunity Report: Partnering with Heartland Forward, we examined the challenges and opportunities for Black business owners in Memphis. The report highlights disparities and proposes strategies to support Black entrepreneurs, emphasizing the importance of entrepreneurship in wealth creation and economic development.
Net Positive Economy Model: We advocate for an economic development model where creation activities outweigh destructive forces. This approach emphasizes that job and talent creation must surpass job and talent destruction, holding economic initiatives accountable for producing net positive results, which is crucial for global competitiveness.
Catalyst30 (Smarter Community): This initiative accelerates Memphis's participation in the global innovation economy by investing in smart city infrastructure—fiber, data, and technology solutions. Catalyst30 aims to create meaningful jobs, empower communities, build inclusive societies, and foster collaborative governance through public-private partnerships.
The 800 Initiative: Co-authored with public and private partners, this effort addresses the underrepresentation of Black businesses with paid employees. Various programs, methods, and advocacy strategies are underway to support these businesses, enhancing their contribution to the local economy.
Looking Ahead: Continuing the Journey
As we reflect on our 15-year journey, we recognize that our evolution is ongoing. The challenges of today require innovative solutions, and Start Co. remains committed to driving innovation-driven development. Our projects and research serve as a foundation for future endeavors, guiding our efforts to create inclusive, sustainable, and thriving communities.
